I am very proud of the work our trial team did last week in Harrison County. ADA Matthew Burrell, Victim Assistance Coordinator David Spence, Investigator Tarsha Dase, ADA Jason Josef, and Investigator Chris Werner all did an outstanding job in a difficult and highly contested trial. I especially want to recognize Matthew Burrell and Jason Josef. Both have been with our office for more than 17 years. We are blessed to have prosecutors with that kind of experience who are still willing to put in the hard work, stand up in the courtroom, and fight for victims.
After hearing the evidence, the jury returned guilty verdicts on three of the four counts. The defendant was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 15 years for crimes committed against a 13-year-old victim. This case is also a reminder to all parents and guardians to pay attention to what our children are doing online. The internet and social media can give offenders a way to contact and communicate with children. Know who your children are talking to, pay attention to their online activity, and keep talking to them about staying safe. I am proud of this team and thankful for the professionalism, preparation, and dedication they brought to the courtroom. More importantly, I am grateful for the work they do every day for victims and the people we serve.
W. Crosby Parker, District Attorney
